BARNYARD SONGS & RHYMES

ROOSTER SONG
Sung to: "Down By The Station"

Down on the farm, early in the morning
Hear the cocky rooster, COCK-A-DOODLE-DO!
Everybody WAKE UP, time to start the day.
See the sun a-rising, chasing dreams away.

Jean Warren

OLD MACDONALD HAD A FARM
Tune: “Old MacDonald Had A Farm”

Old MacDonald had a farm, E I E I O.
And on this farm he had a pig, E I E I O
With an oink, oink, here and an oink, oink there.
Everywhere an oink, oink.
Old MacDonald had a farm, E I E I O.
Traditional

Continue singing about other farm animals, such as:
Cow – moo, moo
Horse – neigh, neigh
Duck – quack, quack,
Sheep – baa, baa
Chick – cheep, cheep

FIVE LITTLE DUCKS

Five little ducks, that I once knew,
Fat were three and skinny were two.
But the big mother duck with the feathers on her back,
She ruled her ducklings with a quack, quack, quack.
Quack, quack, quack. Quack, quack, quack,
She ruled her ducklings with a quack, quack, quack.

Down to the water, they would go,
Waddle, waddle, waddle, to and fro.
But the big mother duck with the feathers on her back,
She ruled her ducklings with a quack, quack, quack.
Quack, quack, quack. Quack, quack, quack.
She ruled her ducklings with a quack, quack, quack.

They swam around here and there.
They bobbed for food, everywhere.
But the big mother duck with the feathers on her back,
She ruled her ducklings with a quack, quack, quack.
Quack, quack, quack. Time to go back.
She told her ducklings with a quack, quack, quack.

THE LITTLE WHITE DUCK
Tune: “The Little White Duck”

There’s a little white duck
Sitting in the water.
A little white duck,
Doing what he ought –ter.

He took a bite of a lilly pad.
Flapped his wings and he said,
“I’m glad, I’m a little white duck
Sitting in the water.”
Quack, Quack, Quack!
Adapted Traditional

FOUR LITTLE DUCKS

Four little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away.
Mother Duck called, “Quack, quack, quack”
But only three ducks came waddling back.

Three little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away.
Mother duck called, “Quack, quack, quack”
But only two ducks came waddling back.

Two little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away.
Mother Duck called, “Quack, quack, quack”
But only one duck came wadding back.

One little duck went out one day,
Over the hills and far away.
Mother Duck called, “Quack, quack, quack”
But no little ducks came waddling back.

Mother duck cried, then looked in the sky.
As four little ducks came flying by.
Adapted traditional
This activity is fun to act out, with one child hiding each time a group goes out to play.

DOWN AT THE BARNYARD
Tune: "Down At the Station"

Down at the barnyard, early in the morning,
See the little farmer, feeding everyone.

Corn for the pigs and oats for the horses,
Hay for the cows and milk for the cat.
Jean Warren

PIGS IN THE MUD

Tune: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"

Roll, roll, roll around, in the mud all day.
That is what the pigs all do. What a way to play!

Roll, roll, roll around, that is how they stay,
Oh so very nice and cool, on a sunny day!
Jean Warren

LITTLE CHICKS
Little chicks, little chicks, running all around.
Scratching here and there, scratching on the ground.

Little chicks, little chicks, what a sight you make.
You always look, as if you're running late!
Jean Warren

BARNYARD PUPPY
Tune: "Pop! Goes the Weasel"

All around the big barnyard, the puppy likes to play.
He just barks at everyone, then he'd runs away!

Round and round and round he goes, getting in the way.
He is always on the run, he hasn't learned to stay!
Jean Warren

GOOD NIGHT BARN

I looked in the barn and what did I see?
Barnyard animals in groups of three.

Three black cows, three white sheep,
Three brown horses, fast asleep.

Three yellow ducks, three red hens,
Three pink pigs asleep in their pens.

Everyone was tucked in for the night.
So I tip-toed out and turned off the light!
Jean Warren

This is a great rhyme to:
  • have your child act out
  • turn into a flannelboard story
  • use when introducing the number three
