SUMMER CRAFTS

SUN PRINTS
This is a fun project for preschoolers to do on a sunny day.
  • Have your child place a piece of colored construction paper out in the sun.
  • Then have him place various shaped objects on the paper; such as, silverware, flowers, keys, a toothbrush, a box, etc.
  • Leave everything out in the sun until the colored paper fades.
  • When your child removes the objects, he will find prints of colored shapes on his paper. Take the paper inside, so it will not fade more.
EXTENTION: To extend this activity, use the print paper and the objects later for a matching game. Have your child match up the real objects with the sun print of the object.
SUNFLOWERS
To do this activity, your child will need a paper plate, some yellow tissue or crepe paper, and some sunflower seeds (with shells).
  • Help your child cut strips of yellow paper approximately 1" x 3" and glue them around the paper plate about 2" from the rim.
  • Next, have her cover the middle of the plate with glue and dump or place real sunflower seeds onto the glue, covering the middle of the sunflower.
  • These can be hung up as they are, or stems can be added with green paper or rolled green tissue paper.
CACTUS
You will need one empty toilet tissue tube and some cardboard for this activity.
  • Cut two slits down 2" from the top on each side of a toilet tissue tube.
  • Cut out a large fat "U" shape from your cardboard. Slide the cardboard down through the slits creating a stand up cactus shape.
  • Your child can decorate his cactus by coloring it green, adding a face if he wants, gluing on ends of tooth picks for spikes or a dried flower on top.
EXTENSION: You can make a cute puppet from the cactus by cutting out a circle in the front of the cactus below the cardboard arms. The circle then becomes a bird's nest. Your child can now use the cactus as a puppet, by sticking her hand up the tube and wiggling a finger out the hole to represent a baby bird in the cactus nest.
