PUMPKIN SCIENCE

ORDERING PUMPKINS
You will need a variety of pumpkins for this activity.
Set out three to five pumpkins of different sizes.
Have your child place the pumpkins in order of their size, starting with the smallest.

MEASURING PUMPKINS
You will need a variety of pumpkins and a ball of yarn for this activity.
Set out two or three pumpkins.
Help your child use the yarn to wrap around the middle of one pumpkin.
Cut the yarn and lay the yarn out in front of that pumpkin.
Repeat with the other two pumpkins.
Line up the yarn strips and see which pumpkin is the largest around the middle.

WEIGHING PUMPKINS
This is a fun activity to do at the grocery store.
Let your child pick out two to three pumpkins to weigh.
Have him place them on the vegetable scale to see how much each one weighs.
Which pumpkin is the heaviest?  Which one is the lightest?

ESTIMATING SEEDS IN  A PUMPKIN
Purchase a medium sized pumpkin and take it home.
Have your child estimate how many seeds they will find inside the pumpkin.
Cover a table with newsprint.
Then, cut off the top of the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds and pulp.
Let your child help you collect all of the pumpkin seeds.
Count the pumpkin seeds.  Was your child close?

GROWING PUMPKIN SEEDS

Plant some of the seeds from your pumpkin in a pot with dirt.
Set in a window that will get sunshine and have your child water the seed every two or three days.

MOLDY PUMPKIN EXPERIMENT

Cut three large pieces of pumpkin.
• Put one piece on a plate and cover it with a clear, glass bowl.
• Put the second one on a plate and leave it uncovered.
• Put the third one in a bowl of water.

Have your child observe the three pieces of pumpkin each day.
• Help your child notice the different ways they decay.
Keep the experiment going as long as you can stand it!
