HEART LEARNING GAMES
Valentines Day is a great time to have your child practice some simple math concepts.

                 
 

SORTING HEARTS
Set out a deck of playing cards.
Let your child find all thirteen heart cards.
 
COLOR HEARTS
Cut a small, medium and large heart shape out of each of these colors of heavy paper: red, green, blue and yellow.
Set the heart shapes on a table and have your child sort them by color.
Variation: Have your child also sort the hearts by size.
 
DROP THE HEART

This game requires a group of children.
Have the children sit in a circle and hold their hands behind their backs.
Choose one child to start and give that child a small heart shape.
Have the child walk around the outside of the circle and drop the heart into someone’s hands.
That child then chases the first child around the circle, trying to catch the first child before he or she get back to the empty space.
The last child to the empty space gets to drop the heart the next time.
 

 
HEART LINEUP
Cut out a variety of different sized hearts. Give them to your child and have him line them up according to size. Big to Little or Little to Big.


COUNTING HEARTS
There are many occasions around Valentine's Day to count hearts.

  • Look through the ad section of the newspaper with your child. How many hearts per page?
  • Count actual Valentines your child is giving or has received.
  • Hide paper heart cutouts around the room and have your child count as he finds them.


QUEEN OF HEARTS

Remove the hearts from a deck of cards. Remove the King and Jack. Turn the cards face down on a table. Take turns with your child drawing a card and saying what number it is. The game is over when someone draws the Queen of Hearts.


MATCHING HEART CARDS
Take the heart cards out of two decks of cards. Shuffle the cards and have your child spread out the cards and look for heart pairs.

When children learn to match shapes, they not only are learning their shapes; they are learning to distinguish between shapes an important beginning reading skill.
