SORTING SKILLS


SORTING BY COLOR

Fall – Have your children sort fall leaves by color.
Winter – Have your children sort bows by color.
Spring/Summer – Sort pictures of flowers.
Any Time – Sort match box cars; poker chips; paint chips, or other toys.
 

SORTING BY SIZE (Height and Width)

Fall – Sort leaves by size.  Line up books by size.
Winter – Sort pinecones by size.  Sort presents by size.
Spring/Summer – Sort rocks, water toys, water guns.
Any Time – Sort spoons, boxes, teddybears.

 
SORTING BY LENGTH

Fall – Sort sticks or yarn pieces
Winter – Sort candles or lengths of ribbon
Spring/Summer – Measure hoses or shadows
Any Time – Sort shoes, or shirts.
 

SORTING BY SHAPE

Fall – Sort shapes of fat or skinny pumpkins.
Winter – Shapes of trees, or presents
Spring/Summer – Shapes of water toys, or traffic signs
Any Time – Sort plastic shapes (circular, square, or triangle); Sort using shape boxes.

  • Be sure that all objects used for sorting are safe and do not pose a choking hazard for preschoolers.
