BLOCK FUN

BLOCK SUBSTITUTES
If you do not have wooden blocks, here are some block suggestions.
Cardboard boxes – such as; cereal boxes, shoe boxes, etc. Be sure to tape down all openings.
Egg Carton – these are fun to stack and store small toys inside.
Picture Cubes – filled with family photos are fun to stack.
Stackable Plastic Containers – such as those used for storing food or the kind you get when purchasing diaper wipes.
Rectangular Sponges – these are inexpensive and very safe for beginning blocks.
Foam pieces – square or rectangular.

BLOCK BRIDES AND TUNNELS
Provide your child with small cars and some blocks.
Show they how to stack their blocks to make a bridge.
Encourage them to drive their cars over the bridge or under the bridge.

UP AND DOWN

Help your child make a tower of wooden blocks.
Talk about how you are building up the blocks.
Perhaps sing one of the block songs below.
Then let your toddler knock the tower down.

RED TOWER, BLUE TOWER
Use plastic, interlocking blocks to help your toddler build a tower with only red blocks.
Then encourage her to build a tower using only blue interlocking blocks.
Count the blocks in each tower.
Have your child point to the red tower, then point to the blue tower.

BLOCK PRINTING

Make a paint pad by folding a paper towel, placing it on a plate and pouring on a small amount of tempera paint.
Show your toddler how to press one side of plastic, interlocking block onto the paint pad and then onto a sheet of paper to make a print.
Let your child try printing each side of the block.
Talk about the different prints each side makes.

BLOCK PAIRS
Look through a box of wooden blocks.
Find pairs of blocks with the same shape, such as two small squares, two rectangles, two large squares, etc.
Mix up the pairs of blocks.
Have your child look for each pair of matching blocks.
Name the shape of each pair of blocks as your child finds a match.

BLOCK PUZZLE

Find several blocks of varying sizes and shapes.

Place the blocks on a piece of cardboard and trace around them with a marker.
Set out the blocks and the cardboard.
Let your toddler place each block on its matching shape on the cardboard.
BLOCK SONGS & RHYMES
BUILD YOUR BLOCKS
Tune:  “Mary Had A Little Lamb”

Build your blocks, way up high,
Way up high, way up high.
Build your blocks, way up high,
‘Til they reach the sky!
                        Jean Warren

BUILD, BUILD, BUILD YOUR BLOCKS
Tune:  “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”

Build, build, build your blocks,
Build them one–by-one.
Make a car, make a boat,
Building’s so much fun.
                                    Jean Warren

BIG BLOCKS, LITTLE BLOCKS

Big blocks, little blocks
One, two, three,
Build them up
So all can see.

Big blocks, little blocks
Far from the ground,
Better watch out –
As they fall down!
